Reference Services for State Agencies
The Library of Virginia is the library at the seat of Virginia government and strives to fulfill the information needs of the General Assembly, state employees, and state agency libraries. To accomplish this goal, the Library provides assistance with locating and accessing published, archival, and online resources, as well as obtaining items through interlibrary loan.
- Library Reference Services staff can help users access published materials such as U.S and Virginia legislation; federal, state, and local government publications; newspaper and journal articles; and books on any topic.
- Archives Reference Services staff can help users access original state agency records, local (city and county) records, and private papers such as organization records and family papers. They can provide research assistance for indexed materials and help users navigate finding aids.
- Special Collections staff can help users access the Library’s extensive map and photograph collections, architectural drawings, rare books, state art, and other visual studies collections.
The Library offers reduced photocopy fees to state agencies. Agencies are billed for copies (.25 each) monthly through Interagency Transfer. If the total charge for the agency is $10 or less, the fee will be waived, and the agency notified at the beginning of the next month.
Reference service is available in person (see hours), by telephone (Library Reference 804-692-3777 / Archives Reference 804-692-3888 / Special Collections 804-692-3703), or by email (Contact Us). If extended research is necessary users are encouraged to visit the Library in person.
We welcome your inquires and look forward to serving you.
