26 New Research Guides Now Available A new content management system called LibGuides helps the Library offer users smoother navigation of its research guides, indexes, and subscription databases, including 26 new research guides for searching individual collections in the Library's catalog. The Research Guides & Indexes page provides access to a collection of resources created by the Library's archivists and librarians. The Databases page allows all of the Library's subscription databases to be viewed either alphabetically or by subject. The databases are available to Virginia residents and can be accessed with either a Library of Virginia library card or the email address associated with a library account. Over time, we will update and reissue all of our research guides in this new format. We are excited about this change and welcome user feedback.
Weinstein Author Series Celebrates Poetry Month April is Poetry Month! Join us online for a free talk on Thursday, April 15 at 6:00 PM by poet, literary historian, and editor Kim Roberts on her book By Broad Potomac’s Shore: Great Poems from the Early Days of Our Nation’s Capital. This comprehensive anthology features poems by poets working and living in the capital from the city's founding in 1800 to 1930. It highlights the work of lesser-known poets—especially women, writers of color, working-class writers, and those who were born enslaved.
Free and open to the public, the Carole Weinstein Author Series supports the literary arts by bringing both new and well-known authors to the Library of Virginia through online or in-person events. Learn more and register here. Purchase Roberts’s book from the Virginia Shop. For more information, contact Dawn Greggs at 804.692.3813 or dawn.greggs@lva.virginia.gov.
T3 Program Transforms Library Services for Teens Sue La Paro, the Library of Virginia’s children's and youth services consultant, and Asa Heyward with Suffolk Public Library are facilitating training for library staff members across Virginia after participating in “Transforming Teen Services: a Train the Trainer Approach” (known as T3). Run by the Young Adult Library Services Association and the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies, the initiative is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Two four-week training sessions have now been offered to teen librarians and teen services staff at small and large libraries across the state on topics such as youth development/ages and stages, connected learning, computational thinking, and equity skills. Additional sessions are being planned to reach all interested library staff who work directly with young adults. For more information, contact Sue La Paro at susan.laparo@lva.virginia.gov or 804.692.3610.
