Virginia Untold Materials Digitized Through a National Archives Grant Virginia Untold: The African American Narrative provides greater accessibility to the Library of Virginia’s pre-1865 records related to enslaved and free Black people. In some instances, these materials contain the only written account of a narrative told from the point of view of the free or enslaved person mentioned in the document.
Library staff members recently visited Backstage Library Works in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to drop off 36 free Black registers that will be digitized with funding from a grant for the Virginia Untold project from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives. Backstage staff members provided a tour of their digitization facility, demonstrating equipment and digitization workflows. Once digitized, the records and data will join the 15,000 records and 200,000 names of enslaved people and free Black people currently found in the database.
