Don’t
Miss Poet Rita Dove’s Weinstein
Author Series Talk at the
Library
|
Join us in person at the Library on
Thursday, July 28 at 6:00
PM for a special evening of
poetry with Pulitzer Prize winner and former
U.S. Poet Laureate Rita Dove, who will read
from her latest book, Playlist for the
Apocalypse. In her first volume of
new poems in 12 years, Dove investigates the
vacillating moral compass guiding America’s,
and the world’s, experiments in
democracy.
|
|
|
A book signing will follow the talk. The
book is available at the Virginia Shop. The Carole Weinstein Author
Series focuses on Virginia authors
and Virginia subjects across all genres and
supports the literary arts by bringing both
new and well-known authors to the Library
through online or in-person events.

Brown
Teacher Fellows and Teacher
Institute
Explore
Hidden Histories
|
This year’s Anne and Ryland Brown
Teacher Fellowship Program and
Teacher Institute both focus on local
stories and histories that have been hidden
from mainstream narratives. Teacher Fellows
work with Library staff members to pursue
research, produce educational materials, and
make presentations on their projects. The
2022 Fellows are Kathryn Parkhurst, a
history teacher with Virginia Virtual
Academy; Pamela Plahs, a history teacher at
Swift Creek Middle School in Chesterfield
County; Josh Shaller, a social studies
teacher at Magna Vista High School in
Ridgeway; and Karen Wallace, Ph.D., a social
studies and history educator at Osbourn High
School in Manassas.
The two-day Brown Teacher
Institute workshops will be held in four
regions across the state: South Boston (July
25–26), Danville (July 28–29), Richmond
(August 1–2), and Arlington (August 3–4).

Learn
the Story Behind the Dunn Plat’s
“Mystery Town”
|
Join us at the Library on Saturday,
August 6, at 10:30 AM for
The Dunn Plat: An Adaptation of
Joseph Smith’s Plan for the City of Zion
in 19th-Century Virginia, a
free presentation on a compelling artifact
of Virginia’s urban planning history. Civil
engineer T. R. Dunn’s 19th-century
manuscript plan of an unnamed
location—originally described by Library
staff members as a “mystery town”—appears to
follow the precepts of Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) founder
Joseph Smith’s 1833 Plan for the City of
Zion.
|
|
|
|
Presented by Joseph W.
Grubbs, who led the Library’s research into
the Dunn plat, this talk will explore the
extensive analysis that confirmed the plat’s
adherence to Smith’s Zion plan, including
land-use characteristics and the development
pattern envisioned for the prospective
settlement.
