Celebrate Women’s History Month
with “A Woman’s Place is in the
House…of Delegates”

Help the Library of Virginia celebrate a
century of women in the House! Since
1923, 109 women have served in the House
of Delegates, with a record number of 37
women in 2023. Join us on
Wednesday, March 29 at 6:00
p.m.
as a group of House members discusses
the challenges, opportunities and
changes they have experienced in Capitol
Square. This event is part of the
Library's 200th anniversary celebration.

Jennifer L. Lawless, Commonwealth
Professor of Politics at the University
of Virginia, will moderate the
discussion with Delegate Betsy B. Carr,
a member since 2010 who has been
recognized for her legislative service
by many professional and community
organizations; Delegate Carrie E.
Coyner, a member since 2020 who has
served on numerous community boards;
Delegate Charniele L. Herring, a member
since 2009 and the first woman and the
first African American to serve as
majority leader of the House of
Delegates; and Delegate Vivian E. Watts,
a member since 1996 (and previously
1982–1985) and currently the
longest-serving female member of the
House.

Library Receives Grant for Virginia
Convention Records of 1776
Conservation Project
|

The Library of Virginia has received a
$10,000 grant to help conserve its
Virginia Convention of 1776 Records, a
collection of invaluable materials that
document some of the most momentous
decisions made in Virginia’s and the
nation’s history.
The Library is among 119 organizations
across the country that will receive
Preserving America Grant Program awards
from
Americana Corner
in order to share stories of America’s
Founding Era. Conservation will prepare
the collection for increased engagement
during America’s 250th anniversary in

March 10 at 10:00 a.m.
with a free webinar, “Tips & Tricks for
Navigating the Library of Virginia’s
Website.” Reference librarian Becky
Schneider will present strategies for
effectively searching and browsing the
Library’s digital collections and online
catalog, as well as options to help
those who hit a brick wall.

The Genealogy Workshop Series is aimed
at those who are new to family history
research or who want to delve deeper
into records. This year’s in-person
workshops explore African American
family history, military history and
architectural records.
