Learn
About the Creation of the “General Map of Virginia”
|
Join us on Jan. 22 at noon for a virtual presentation on the
ambitious 19th-century mapping project that resulted in the publication of the
first official map of the Commonwealth — one of the first official state maps in
the nation. The Library of Virginia’s senior map archivist, Cassandra Farrell,
will discuss the efforts and surveying teams involved in producing the detailed
manuscript maps for each county that were required to create the Virginia state
map — often called “the general map” in correspondence from the time.
This event complements the Library’s exhibition “Mapping the
Commonwealth, 1816–1826,” on view through June 7, 2025.

to Frontline” Spotlights the Library’s World War II
Collections
|
Explore the Library’s World War II collections through "Homefront to
Frontline: Virginia's WWII Story," a lobby display, online exhibition and
collection of online resources commemorating the war’s 80th
anniversary.
Archival materials, posters, photographs, letters and other documents bring to
life the experiences of those who served in the military as well as those who
supported the war effort at home. The lobby display runs through October 2025,
with content rotating in April.

Virginia Chronicle, the Library’s freely accessible database of digitized
newspapers, has surpassed a page count of 4.5 million! New titles spanning the
years 1808–2009 from localities across Virginia were added this fall, including
the Charlotte Gazette, the Danville Commercial Appeal, the Nottoway Record, the
Rappahannock News, the Union Star of Brookneal, and four Richmond newspapers — the
Virginian, the Virginia Patriot, the Visitor and the Spirit of 'Seventy-Six. View
the New Arrivals section of Virginia Chronicle to see the latest titles.

Become a volunteer transcriber in 2025 through the Making History with LVA program! The Library acquires,
preserves and promotes access to unique collections of Virginia’s history and
culture. With more content and research moving online, we work hard to make our
digital documents accessible.
Volunteers like you can transcribe handwritten pages and historical newspapers by
reading the text online and typing it into digital form to help make historical
documents more searchable and usable for researchers.
|
|
|
|
The Library offers both virtual and in-person sessions each month to share
information about our collections and teach volunteers how to get started. So
whether you want to log in from home or join a group here at the Library, you can
help us enhance access to collections of over 400 years of Virginia history.
