A Celebration of Virginia Folklife

The Library of Virginia and the Virginia Folklife Program of Virginia Humanities present a free two-day celebration featuring documentary screenings, live music, activities and more to highlight Virginia’s diverse and evolving folklife heritage. “A Celebration of Virginia Folklife” will be held at the Library as part of its yearlong 200th anniversary celebration.
Friday, July 7, 5:30–8 p.m. | Reception, Film Screening & Program
The celebration kicks off with a reception, short screenings of apprenticeship documentaries and a stage program honoring teams in the Virginia Folklife Program’s 2022–2023 apprenticeship program. Featured artists include artisans, musicians and dancers.

Saturday, July 8, 12–4 p.m. | Performances, Displays & Activities
The celebration continues with performances, displays and family activities highlighting old and new Virginia musical traditions, including blues, Bomba, fiddling, shape-note singing and more. View rare items from the Library’s music collections and documentary films featuring Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship teams. Explore an “instrument petting zoo” with items like ukuleles and mountain dulcimers.
