Printer in office of his father Augustine Davis (119) and possibly for Thomas Ritchie (360).
The sons of Augustine Davis have left only fleeting evidence of their lives; John Davis was his eldest son but achieved prominence on his own, despite laboring in his father's press office. His death was apparently accidental at just twenty-three. The only obituary published was in Thomas Ritchie's Enquirer, who had "long been sensible of his tenderest friendship, knew of his merit, and appreciated his worth" – a remarkable description from someone who was his father's staunchest political enemy.
