Publisher of Genius of Liberty (1800) in Fredericksburg as partner to Robert Mercer (301).
Field is essentially an unknown individual. His association with Robert Mercer suggests that he was trained printer; Mercer was the editor-financier of the Genius of Liberty for its entire life (1797-1800); he engaged a tradesman-partner to produce the Republican newspaper in a series of one-year contracts. Field was his last partner, who had joined the office about six months before Mercer's death in September 1800. It appears that he was not a part of the succeeding press office of James Walker (425) who acquired Mercer's press and paper that October. It is also clear that he was not the Thomas Field (162) who then published the Petersburg Republican, as their employments were concurrent; nor was he the Petersburg physician Richard Field who later edited the Petersburg Intelligencer, as the doctor was then engaged exclusively in his medical practice. Without further evidence, this Field's identity cannot be determined.
