Clarksburg?
Publisher of the Herald of Zion & Philomathean Magazine (1810) with John O. Laidley (258).
Hersey is an unknown figure in the Virginia printing trade. He is listed in the bibliography of West Virginia imprints compiled by Delf Norona and Charles Shetler as co-publisher with Laidley of the Herald of Zion at Clarksburg in 1810 based on their correspondence with Earle Lutz, a Richmond-based book-collector in 1956. However, no copy of the imprint has ever been found, nor does the available public record indicate any Hersey present in Clarksburg then; moreover, Laidley conducted a press office in Morgantown at that same time, not in Clarksburg, where there is also no record of any Hersey living there. These circumstances suggest that the publishing locale has been misidentified and that Hersey was a transient figure who left only indirect evidence of a short-lived periodical in the bibliographic record.
