Retail storekeeper in Alexandria selling books in 1816.
Shaw conducted a "Fancy & Variety Store" – meaning luxury goods and house wares – on Fairfax Street in Alexandria in early 1816. Books were part of the store's offerings, but the single advertisement that records the store's existence does not list the titles or genres sold. No other evidence for Shaw's store has been uncovered, and after April 1816 the store was not promoted in Alexandria's newspapers. So a full identification of Shaw cannot be made. He may be the John Shaw who established a similar business in nearby Leesburg in 1817, but any definitive link is still wanting.
