Bookseller in Virginia (1803-07), probably in the Shenandoah Valley.
Spengler is unidentifiable from the imprint record alone, which provides the only record of his presence in the Virginia print trade. From 1803 to 1807, he was one of three retailers of Der Neue Hoch Deutsche Americanische Calender (The New High German American Alman-ac) in Virginia, issued annually in Baltimore by the bilingual publisher Samuel Sower (1767-1820), uncle of Brook W. Sower (396). That fact this imprint was a German-language one suggests Spengler was a storekeeper in one of the German-speaking communities in the Shenandoah Valley, but a definitive identification requires more evidence.
NB: Surname spelled Sauer in German language imprints; Sower in English language ones.
