Printer in Fredericksburg in 1817, probably in the office of the Virginia Herald.
A fleeting presence in the historical record, Caldwell's inclusion in the printing trade comes from a marriage notice in Fredericksburg's Virginia Herald in September 1817. Tracing the name of his bride, Rebecca Storts of Delaware, it appears that both newlyweds were natives of Kent County, Delaware. That origin also suggests that this Caldwell was a Quaker, as were so many other print-tradesmen of that name in Virginia. If from Delaware, this Caldwell was a former seaman (documented as such in 1809) who had served in the War of 1812. Their marriage took place in Philadelphia, suggesting that he had been trained there after the war, and that he had relocated to Fredericksburg to pursue his new craft. Publication of the notice in the Herald indicates an ongoing association with that press office, the town's largest, and so with its owners, Timothy Green (194) and John D. Harrow (204); yet, small job-printing offices also survived there, and 1817 was just when William Fairfax Gray (192) and Ebenezer P. Cady (070) terminated, amicably, their preexisting associations with Green to focus on their stationary and bookselling firm.
