- notes: Willis resumed sole ownership in summer 1798, probably in July. In March 1799, he was severely beaten in his office by two Federalist officials over an item he published; in July, his farm in adjacent Berkeley County was heavily damaged by unknown hands; the two events induced Willis to sell his paper and leave Martinsburg for Ohio; the Guardian was transferred to Armstrong Charlton effective November 1, 1799.
