Cappon reports Davis retired from firm following issue of April 2, 1821, so start date seen here. Last issue now known extant is for December 31, 1822, so end date above. Ramsay employed the masthead ornament "Virginia Patriot" frequently during his tenure, so the inclusion of all numbers bearing that adornment in surviving collected runs of his paper and in associated bibliographic entries. It also appears Ramsay renamed this paper's long-lived, twice-weekly country edition as the Political Expositor on March 30, 1821 with that same ornament in the banner, resulting in conflated entries in various reference sources, particularly in USNP items, a project that lacked centralized quality-control of its entries. - lineage_title: Virginia Patriot
