- notes: Following issue of February 7, 1835, Robinson sold the Compiler to the firm of Gallaher & Walker in order to start a "Literary Journal" as an alternative to the new Southern Literary Messenger begun the preceding August; that title never issued. Gallaher had conducted the Virginia Free Press at Harper's Ferry and Charlestown from 1821 to late 1834; after serving in 1834-35 Assembly, he joined with Richmond job-printer James C. Walker (1808-72) to buy Compiler from Robinson; the pair promptly shortened the daily's title to form usually used by publishers elsewhere reprinting items from their paper. At the same time, Gallaher & Walker reduced frequency of their "country edition" (LCCN no. 85-038619) from thrice-weekly to twice-weekly.
