The Spirit of Union
- id: 385
- end_date: ca. December 26, 1817
- frequency: Weekly (Sat)
- lineage_id: 88
- proprietors: Burling & Gray
- start_date: October 17, 1817
- variant_number: Richmond 20-01
- notes: No copies known extant; history of this title derived solely from references to the weekly in other journals. Proposals for this paper circulated from August through October 1817; Richmond Enquirer reported paper commenced publication on October 17th. Termination came as a result of debt litigation; Burling's printing office had been seized by creditors by December 30th, suggesting that the last number of this paper issued on December 23rd, hence end date reported here. Burling committed suicide on the day before the office's sale by auction January 6, 1818; after his death, Gray advertised his intention to resume publication of the weekly, but never realized that plan.
