- notes: Winchester native Edward Caledon Bruce (1825-1900) acquired the Virginian from John C. Bowyer in early August 1848 in combination with James W. Beller (1820-77), founder and editor of Charlestown's Spirit of Jefferson, and Andrew J. O'Bannon (1815-60), a lawyer in that town; they sold their interests in the venture to Bruce sometime in the ensuing year, leaving him sole proprietor until the winter of 1856-57.
