- notes: John J. Palmer (1807-79) acquired the Virginian from E. C. Bruce sometime in winter of 1856-57, and remained sole proprietor until publication ceased with issue of February 27, 1862. Winchester was occupied by Federal forces on March 12, 1862; Palmer's press was used by printers in 5th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers to issue two numbers (March 18th & 22nd) of The Connecticut Fifth; that unit then left the city and either destroyed or took away that press, so preventing Palmer from restarting his weekly.
