Davis sold a controlling interest in the Republican to New York City journalist James Gordon Brooks (1801-41) at end of July 1831, claiming ill health; he apparently retained a minority interest until late 1834, when he offered to buy the Wheeling Gazette. In March 1836, Brooks made Charles J.D. Freeland (1809-40), an editorial writer with the Richmond Whig, as his principal assistant.
