- notes: At the end of January 1820, William F. Gray sold the Herald and its office to Harrow, which seems to have concluded a year-long arrangement between the two that allowed Timothy Green to retire in January 1819 while Harrow mobilized the capital needed for him to buy the business at this time; Harrow's first independent number issued February 2, 1820.
Gray soon removed to Alexandria, while Harrow continued as sole owner until his death in 1851.Thereafter, the Herald was bought by J. Harrison Kelly, who would conduct it until its closing in 1876, so surviving a two-year-long suspension during the Civil War. - lineage_title: Virginia Herald
