- title: Lines written by Lewis Littlepage, a youth at William & Mary College, 15 years of age. An elegy on the death of the late Colonel Tarleton Fleming, of Rock Castle. Goochland County, A. D. 1778 ...
- sequence_number: 14
- year: 1778
- place_issued: Williamsburg
- issuing_press: Uncertain
- author: Littlepage, Lewis (1762-1802).
- notes: Evidently the initial publication of Littlepage, who was noted in his early years as poetical prodigy by his contemporaries; he later became a diplomat-for-hire among the courts of Europe (Spain, Poland, Russia), following an introduction to diplomacy as an aide to John Jay while that New York Federalist was the American minister plenipotentiary to Spain.
Fleming (1722-78) was the sheriff of Goochland County who became a key figure in that county's Revolutionary leadership, serving on its Committee of Safety, as a delegate to the newly-independent General Assembly, and as commander of the county's militia; he died while posted to the Hampton area in January 1778; this elegy was published that summer.
Sheet lacks colophon; Littlepage's verse was published in both Virginia Gazettes then issued (Purdie; Dixon & Hunter), so an attribution by his prior associations cannot be made here.
