Some Observations on the Constitution (B).
- imprint_number: 1788.027
- title: Observations upon the proposed plan of federal government. With an attempt to answer some of the principal objections that have been made to it. By a native of Virginia.
- sequence_number: 27
- year: 1788
- place_issued: Uncertain
- issuing_press: Uncertain
- author: Native of Virginia.
- notes: One of the two editions of this work issued in 1788; this variant lack title page, and so lacks a readily identified issuing press and location. As all of the institutions holding copies of this edition presumptively record the issuing press as that of Hunter & Prentis in Petersburg (eho issued the other edition), item is included here, despite possibility it is not a Virginia imprint.
Authorship is disputed. This variant carries the manuscript credit "By Colo. James Monroe" entered under caption title, so was attributed to Monroe by Evans and Wyatt (Petersburg Imprints); yet the second variant (1788.025), also consulted by Evans, carries the differing manuscript credit "By Burwell Starke" on its title page; moreover, the Rare Book Division of Library of Congress notes receiving a letter from a "bibliographer at the University of South Carolina" reporting that the author of the second variant was Col. Daniel Fisher of Greenville County. Hence this Index follows the lead of the Virginia Historical Society, who employs the non-specific attribution to "A Native of Virginia," as in title; their copy was originally bound in the pamphlet collection of St. George Tucker (1752-1827).
