- imprint_number: 1795.012
- title: The substance of an argument in the case of the carriage duties, delivered before the Circuit Court of the United States, in Virginia, May term, 1795, by John Wickham, counsel for the United States vs. Hylton.
- sequence_number: 12
- year: 1795
- place_issued: Richmond
- issuing_press: Augustine Davis
- author: Wickham, John, 1763-1839
- notes: Imprint lacks date; Evans assign 1795 as date from text; his supposition appears correct given the contemporary interest in this case; controversially, the court found a federal direct tax on carriages was legitimate, leading to an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court (see Hylton v. United States, 3 U.S. 171) in February 1796. Herein Wickham laid out the reasons for and necessity of the tax; the Supreme Court agreed and upheld the Circuit court opinion.
