• notes: First of the five editions issued in Hening's lifetime of this manual for county-court justices; it was the first published after the Revolution in Virginia, supplanting the now obsolete manual of Richard Starke, Office and Authority of a Justice of Peace (1774.015), composed after the 1769 revisal of Virginia law; Hening drew on the revisal of 1792 in drafting this new work.
