• notes: In a letter dated January 16, 1797, Pickering provided Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1746-1825), then in Paris, with the position of the Federalist administration on charges made by Pierre-Auguste Adet, representing the revolutionary government of France, that the recent treaty with Great Britain (Jay's Treaty, 1796) violated both the spirit and letter of the 1778 treaties with France, so aiding the British in their ongoing war with the French Republic.
