  Fowler wrote to counter "the illiberal aspersions which had circulated through many of the public prints" [p, 4] against Thomas Paine's Age of Reason (1794-95), and particularly against the recent treatise of Alexandria's Presbyterian minister John Muir, An Examination of the Principles Contained in "The Age of Reason" (Baltimore 1795). Consequently, he structured his text in multiple parts: an introduction [6-18], a summation of Paine's argument [19-35], then some "Remarks on Dr. Muir's publication, entitled, 'An examination of the principles contained in The age of reason'"- [36-74], "Remarks on the Common Notion of its being Safest to Believe at all Times" {75-89]. "Remarks on the Absurdities contained in the First Three Chapters of the Book of Genesis" [90-98], "Remarks on the Scriptures" [99-120], "The Truth of the New Testament fairly put to the Test" [121-138], and "Mahometanism" [139-150], before offering an untitled conclusion [150-161].
