  Herein Fowler continued his defense of Thomas Paine's Age of Reason (1794-95), begun a year earlier in his Alexandria-issued The Truth of the Bible Fairly Put to the Test (1797.020); this commentary dealt with clerical assaults emanating from Great Britain – specifically the Anglican clergyman and academic Richard Watson (1737–1816) and the Irish prelate John Anketell (b. 1750?) – rather than from local Presbyterian minister John Muir, as previously.
