• notes: A three-page compilation of seven general and division orders, issued January 4 to January 29, 1800, published by the commander of the Seventh Regiment of U.S. Infantry, William C. Bentley, for the information of his subordinates, dated "Richmond, February 8, 1800."
  This title is generally ascribed either to the U.S. Army or to its commanding officer, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, as Bentley's explanatory notes and regimental orders are the closing element of the text; those seven orders concern discipline in the ranks of the Army, and Bentley commands conformance to them in that final heading; Bentley also announced the convening of courts-martial on April 1, 18000, for three members of the artillery unit then attached to his regiment for breaches of the Army's code of conduct.
  This regiment was organized in the summer of 1798 under the authority granted Adams by Congress in response to the conflict with France; it was dissolved in May 1800 in response to concerns about increasing military expenditures and complaints about creating a standing army; at the time Bentley circulated these orders, the unit was stationed in Richmond.
  Title lacks printer credit; while clearly issued in Richmond, ascribing this imprint to a specific press there would be purely speculative, so the indeterminacy here.
