• notes: The author is the daughter of Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732-99), the French playwright who led the covert operation begun in early 1776 to supply the Continental army with French munitions through a pretended Spanish merchant house, Roderigue Hortalez & Co. That front company dealt with Silas Deane of Connecticut, who was charged by Virginian Arthur Lee with self-interested dealings with the French, and so was not paid for materials he acquired from Beaumarchais, in turn depriving the Frenchman of his compensation – hence the appeal here to the Congress to settle the account in favor of Beaumarchais's estate.
