• notes: Herein, the petitioners ask for the establishment of a tobacco-inspection warehouse in the town of Lynchburg; the sole surviving copies of this petition (held in the state archives at the Library of Virginia) carry several manuscript endorsements; petition was submitted alongside another from Joseph Martin asking permission to build such a facility a on his land adjacent to the town (1801.044); the apparently coordinated effort resulted in the Assembly passing an act on December 30, 1801 (Chap. XXXV of Acts of December 1801 Assembly), granting Martin permission to proceed with his warehouse project.
  Sheet lacks colophon; the imprint's intensely local focus indicates a Lynchburg origin; at this time, the only press operating in that town was that of John Carter, so the attribution here.
