[Lorenzo Dow] May 17th, 1804." That proposed biography was published later in Hartford in 1804 (Shaw & Shoemaker 6189).
  Dow was an itinerant Methodist preacher from Connecticut who made his first appearances in Virginia in 1804; this was a second variant of his first publication, The Chain of Lorenzo, originally published in Augusta, Georgia, in 1803; usually called Lorenzo's Thoughts, Dow would issue more than thirty separate editions over the next three decades, varying length and content over time; the first Virginia variant (1804.049) issued from the Lynchburg press of John Weaver in March 1804; this shorter version (about half the length of the Lynchburg edition) was issued in May to facilitate the fundraising campaign that Dow described herein.
