• notes: Stockdale was a British publisher and bookseller known for his liberal proclivities; in 1788, he published, with his partner John Murray, A Review of the Principal Charges against Warren Hastings Esq., late Governor General of Bengal by John Logan; Logan's text was critical of the House of Commons for its impeachment of the former governor-general of British India in 1787; yet Stockdale alone was charged for publishing a "seditious libel" and tried in the Court of King's Bench in December 1789 at the insistence of conservatives in Parliament; Stockdale was acquitted by a sympathetic jury.
  In this title, Pleasants (or an unnamed editor) apparently drew on The whole Proceedings on the trial of an information exhibited ex officio' by the Kings' Attorney General, against John Stockdale (London, 1790), but did not reprint the entirety of that work.
