• notes: Minter was an evangelical minister who engaged the early American print trade to advance his unique variety of Methodism, as well as to denounce the hierarchical bent of the faith's leaders, particularly Bishop Francis Asbury. When his ministerial relationship with the author of these letters, one Sarah Jones (1754-94), threatened to become a physical fixation, Minter experienced a spiritual crisis that led to his decision to castrate himself, so removing carnal desire from his life; this heavily edited collection of letters Jones wrote to him in 1791 was offered as a justification for his actions and endorsement of his incendiary ministry. This was his sole Alexandria imprint; his later Virginia imprints were issued from Richmond presses.
