- notes: Notice of addition of Charles Prentiss, a Federalist writer from Massachusetts, as editor of Davis's newspaper; formerly an editor of the Washington Federalist (which was started as the Virginia Federalist in Richmond by William Alexander Rind in 1799), this controversialist was brought to Virginia in order to liven up the then twenty-year-old Gazette; this vaunted alliance with Davis continued only until the end of 1805.
