• notes: George Wythe (1726-1806) was a leading figure of the Revolutionary generation in Virginia, serving in both the state and national legislatures during the transitional period from the 1760s until 1778; considered the foremost judicial mind in the new Commonwealth, Wythe taught many of the era's legal lights, including Jefferson and Marshall; he was named to the High Court of Chancery in 1778 and served there until his death in June 1806; his death was shocking and unexpected, having apparently been poisoned by a grandnephew who was his heir; Wythe's funeral was the largest ever staged to date in Richmond.
  Ritchie was paid by the Council of State on July 9, 1806, for printing 300 copies of this sheet, hence this title's inclusion in Swem's bibliography.
