• notes: Herein, Mercer announced a challenge to the incumbent representative John Dawson (1762-1814), a stalwart of Madison's faction of the Republican Party, and a friend who had been elected to Congress in Madison's place in 1797; a Tertium Quid like John Taylor of nearby Caroline (conservative Republicans), Mercer was handily defeated in this 1806 election.
  Sheet lacks colophon; as Fredericksburg was the town proximate to Mercer's Spotsylvania residence, that town was most likely the place of publication; from spring 1805 through early 1811, Timothy Green conducted the only printing office there, hence the attribution here.
