  Wood offered a defense of Aaron Burr, who had been cleared of charges of conspiring with Spanish officials to seize the Louisiana Territory in 1805, a plot separate from that for which Burr was eventually tried in 1807; Wood had circulated rumors of this earlier conspiracy as editor of The Western World in Frankfort, but these proceedings had convinced Wood that Burr was innocent and Republican leaders were responsible for sullying his reputation; this defense appeared just before Wood began publishing a new anti-administration newspaper, The Atlantic World, in nearby Washington with Virginia-born printer Thomas Willis White.
