Prospectus for a Continuation of Burk's History of Virginia.
- imprint_number: 1808.031
- title: History of Virginia. Skelton Jones having entered into a contract with the administrator of the late John D. Burke [sic] of Petersburg, proposes to complete the Fourth and Last Volume of the History of Virginia ... Richmond, August 2, 1808 ...
- sequence_number: 31
- year: 1808
- place_issued: Richmond
- issuing_press: Uncertain
- author: Jones, Skelton (1775-1812).
- notes: The completion of the last two volumes of John Daly Burk's five-volume History of Virginia was interrupted by the author's untimely death in a duel in April 1808; Burk's friends and political allies convinced Jones, brother and heir to the late public printer Meriwether Jones. to finish the project with a single volume; herein, Jones seeks subscribers to finance that fourth and last volume; however, jones also died an early death in October 1812, likely the result of wounds received in dueling, so leaving it to Louis Hue Girardin to finally complete project in 1816, some eight years after Burk's death.
Sheet lacks colophon; Jones was part of Republican leadership circles in Richmond, meaning this title likely issued from one of the three republican presses there -- Samuel Pleasants, Thomas Ritchie, or Seaton Grantland; hence the indeterminacy here.
