• notes: On the evening of June 22, 1807, the British frigate HMS Leopard fired on American frigate USS Chesapeake off of Norfolk, then boarded the damaged vessel, and seized several sailors that were claimed to be British deserters; the overt violation of American sovereignty led then President Jefferson to order all British ships, naval and maritime, out of U.S. water on July 2nd, then issued a requisition for 100,000 men for militia service in enforcing the ban.
