- imprint_number: 1808.074
- title: A letter from Daniel Bedinger, late Navy agent at Norfolk, to Robert Smith, Esq. secretary of the Navy: with an appendix, containing sundry official and other papers.
- sequence_number: 74
- year: 1808
- place_issued: Norfolk
- issuing_press: Augustus C. Jordan
- author: Bedinger, Daniel (1761-1818).
- notes: Signed and dated in print [p. 18]: "Daniel Bedinger. Norfolk, March 20th, 1808."
Text is a defense of Bedinger's conduct as the naval agent in Norfolk and commissary of the Gosport Navy Yard; dismissed by Robert Smith, Secretary of the Navy, in a brief letter dated February 15th, Bedinger responded here with questions as to why Smith provided no reason for his dismissal beyond a comment to a Virginia congressman that he had just received too many complaints about Bedinger; nearly two-thirds of this imprint is an appendix presenting the correspondence between Bedinger and Smith after his appointment to office in 1802, evincing Smith's ongoing approval of Bedinger's conduct prior to his unanticipated dismissal.
