- notes: Smith was then acting as governor after the resignation on March 3, 1811, of James Monroe to become Secretary of State in the Madison administration; Monroe succeeded John Tyler Sr. in January 1811 after he had resigned to accept a federal judgeship; Smith's subsequent conduct in office led to his election as governor in his own right on December 6, 1811, at the next session of the Assembly; his governorship was brief, however, as tragically he became the most prominent Virginian to die in the Richmond Theater Fire just 20 days later.
