• notes: Lee was a one of the influential brothers born at Leesylvania in Prince William County to Capt. Henry Lee and Lucy Grymes; he served as the first U.S. congressman from the district for northern Virginia and then as a member of the Virginia Assembly; brother Charles Lee (1758–1815) served as U.S. Attorney General under both Washington and Adams; eldest brother Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee (1756–1818) was a cavalry officer in Washington's army who served as governor of Virginia and fathered Confederate general Robert E. Lee (1807-70). Here, Lee was a visible connection to Washington's leadership cadre, now fast fading from the public scene, so an apt choice to speak at the Society's annual celebration.
