• notes: It appears that copies of this petition were submitted to the General Assembly from Brooke, Berkeley, Harrison, Pittsylvania, and Washington counties asking for a division of Staunton court-district in the District Courts of Chancery system, which covered all of the counties west of the Blue Ridge; such had been submitted to each session since the establishment of the district system in 1805; this Assembly passed legislation on January 28, 1812, dividing the vast district into four new district courts, meeting at Staunton, Wytheville, Winchester, and Clarksburg (Chap. CV of Acts of December 1811 Assembly),
  Sheet lacks colophon; only known copies, in the state archives at the Library of Virginia, are dated in manuscript "December 4, 1811," the date received by House of Delegates; names of the counties submitting this petition indicate that it could have been printed in Martinsburg, Clarksburg, or Morgantown, so the indeterminacy here.
