• notes: This petition was submitted to the General Assembly along with others from Berkeley, Brooke, Harrison, Pittsylvania, and Washington counties asking for a division of Staunton court-district in the District Courts of Chancery system, which covered all of the counties west of the Blue Ridge; such had been submitted to each session since the establishment of the district system in 1805; this Assembly passed legislation on January 28, 1812, dividing that vast district into four new district courts, meeting at Staunton, Wytheville, Winchester, and Clarksburg (Chap. CV of Acts of December 1811 Assembly).
  Sheet lacks colophon; only known copy, in state archives at the Library of Virginia, is dated in manuscript "December 5, 1811," the date received by House of Delegates, with the blank completed for Wood County; that identification indicates that it could have been printed in either Clarksburg or Morgantown, so the indeterminacy here.
