• notes: Events in the summer of 1812, particularly the anti-Federalist riots in nearby Baltimore, led to a financial crisis for Snowden's daily newspaper; in September, he engaged Simms, a local lawyer and son of Revolutionary War hero Charles Simms, as his editor; the association soon became a partnership with the Simms family and their friends investing money in Snowden's failing Alexandria Gazette, so saving that journal for the duration of the War.
  Only known copy, held by the Virginia Historical Society, was evidently employed as a circular letter, being addressed on the verso to "Richard Varick, Esq., N. York." Varick (1753-1831) was a Federalist lawyer and politician in New York, formerly a mayor of the city; during the Revolutionary War, he had served on Washington's staff, and so would have been familiar with the general's friend and subordinate Charles Simms (and his family); at this time, Varick was actively promoting the idea of a diplomatic solution to end the war with Great Britain.
