Virginia Almanack for 1813 (William F. Gray).
- imprint_number: 1812.079
- title: [The Virginia almanack for the year of our Lord 1813].
- sequence_number: 79
- year: 1812
- place_issued: Fredericksburg
- issuing_press: William F. Gray
- author: Sharp, Joshua.
- notes: Only known copy, held by the Library of Congress, lacks first 4 pages, including title page; Drake ascribed this item to the Fredericksburg press of William F. Gray, with calculations supplied by Benjamin Bates (1769-1812); however, that is an erroneous assignment.
Presence of lengthy advertisement for Johnson & Warner bookstores [p. 51-56] suggested a Philadelphia origin; comparison of this item to their Philadelphia (Shaw & Shoemaker 51217) and Richmond (1812.052) almanacs for 1813 revealed that all three titles are typographically identical through page 42, with an occasional transposition of pages in each one; thereafter the Richmond and Fredericksburg editions carry Virginia specific content set exclusively for that version; this item does not carry the detailed list of members of the General Assembly seen in the Richmond edition.
This analysis indicates Gray contracted Johnson & Warner to produce this almanac for him, according to his specifications; the Richmond edition carries a less-ornate title page than the Philadelphia one, suggesting the same was the case in this variant with lost title page here.
