• notes: John Winter was a Maryland-trained journeyman (and failed journalist there) whose son then sailed with the privateer fleet out of Baltimore; in his introduction to this text [p. 2], Winter reports his intent to record for posterity the "deliberate and heroic conduct" of those in the U.S. Navy during the War of 1812; that note is dated: "Alexandria, April 8, 1813."
  Text reprints published reports on naval actions against British fleet interdicting American trade in the Atlantic, specifically that of USS Constitution's engagement with HMS Guerriere (August 19, 1812), of USS Wasp's with HMS Frolic (October 15 1812), of USS United States' with HMS Macedonian (October 25 1812), of USS Constitution's with HMS Java (December 29, 1812), and of USS Hornet's with HMS Peacock (February 24 1813); these actions resulted in capture of five British ships in six months, so reinvigorating support for the war effort.
