• notes: Campbell was a Petersburg educator and bookseller, as well as the father of noted Virginia historian Charles Campbell (1807-76); he offered this history to complete the story of Virginia left incomplete by the difficulties attending publication of the last volume of John Daly Burk's History of Virginia (1804.057, 1806.058, 1806.059), by this time seven years in production.
  Text concludes with appendix containing "Biographical sketches of distinguished characters, that occur in the History of Virginia" [213-285], and a "Sketch of the history of the church in Virginia" [287-310] written by the Presbyterian minister Moses Hoge (1752-1820).
  Imprint states: "Petersburg, (Va.) Published by J. W. Campbell, William Fry, printer, 1813." The fact that Fry was a Philadelphia printer shows this book's actual place of production, as does the copyright [p. 2], which reports that Campbell registered the book in Philadelphia on August 5, 1813. Campbell issued another edition of this title there (Shaw-Shoemaker 28070) with an imprint indicating that he had partnered with Philadelphia publisher, Mathew Carey to produce this work. A comparison of the two editions reveals that they are identical except for the imprint statement on the title page; the Petersburg edition has not been recorded by the standard authorities, nor has it been filmed by the Early American Imprints Series.
