- notes: Barbour herein asked for volunteers to augment the Virginia militia forces already called to service to counter the British incursion into the Chesapeake; his call came in response to the capture and burning of Washington on August 24th following the defeat of American militia forces at the Battle of Bladensburg [Maryland]; British forces eventually withdrew from the Chesapeake region after failing to capture and destroy Baltimore as well.
